‘Bade Miyan-Chhote Miyan’ disguised as baraatis decamp with cash, gifts in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar: Thieves posing as Baraatis have decamped with cash and other gifts from a wedding venue in Odisha capital here recently.

The thieves—a minor boy aged around 12 and the ringmaster—reportedly decamped with around Rs 5 lakh in cash from a wedding venue in Badagada area in the capital city here on February 7, sources said.

The incident has been captured in the CCTV cameras installed at the mandap. The police have launched a probe into the incident on the basis of an FIR lodged by the bride’s family, sources added.

As visible in the CCTV footage, the minor boy (Chhote Miyan) and the ringmaster (Bade Miyan) entered the wedding venue in disguise of Baraatis along with the other guests.

The minor boy, wearing a traditional turban on his head, went near a sofa just in front of the stage erected for the bride and groom at the mandap.

The minor boy slowly lifted two heavy packets from the sofa after sitting there for a few minutes and exited through the backdoor. The two thieves reportedly scaled the boundary wall of the mandap before fleeing the spot.

“The ‘Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan’ gang has decamped with around Rs 5 lakh in cash from the venue. The guests have gifted the money to the bride and the amounts were kept in several envelops,” said a source.
