‘Banglar Rosogolla’ row: Hearing concludes, order reserved till Oct 31

Bhubaneswar: The Geographical Indication (GI) Registry of India yesterday concluded hearing on a petition seeking revocation of GI tag accorded to ‘Banglar Rosogolla’ and reserved its order till October 31.

Chairman of Bhubaneswar-based Regional Development Trust, Ramesh Chandra Sahoo had filed the petition and sought revocation of the GI tag given to West Bengal.

“Arguments presented by the lawyer representing the West Bengal Government were strongly countered by our lawyer P. Sundarnathan,” said Sahoo.

“GI tag given to ‘Banglar Rosogolla’ should be cancelled as West Bengal has obtained the status fraudulently by submitting fake documents,” said Editor of Odia Parba, Santosh Kumar Sahoo, who had joined Ramesh Chandra Sahoo in filing the petition.

Notably, the GI Registry recently granted the much-awaited status to ‘Odisha Rasagola’, reaffirming Odisha’s claim that the sweetmeat existed since 15th -16th century as it has been mentioned in the ‘Dandi Ramayana’.
