Banking services reach doorsteps of centenarian woman dragged on cot to branch

Nuapada: A few days after reports of a 60-year-old woman dragging her bedridden centenarian mother on a cot to bank  to withdraw money surfaced in media, India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) extended its helping hand to the elderly woman.

The Government owned public sector bank has helped her by opening a bank account, through which she can withdraw the cash at her doorstep using Aadhaar Enabled Payment System.

Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad took to Twitter and informed about the development today.

Had learnt from media about difficulty faced by a very old lady in Odisha in withdrawing cash from her bank account. Happy to share that India Post Payments bank helped her by opening a bank account. Now she can withdraw cash at her doorstep using Aadhaar Enabled Payment System,” the Minister tweeted. 

Expressing gratitude to the Law Minister for his intervention, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, “Thank for your commitment in providing doorstep banking to the unbanked. IPPB  is making financial inclusion for all Indians a reality.”

On June 9, 60-year-old Punjimati Dei dragged her mother on a cot up on the village street to reach Utkal Grameen Bank, Baragaon branch to get COVID-19 assistance money of Rs 1,500 after the bank asked for a thumb impression of her centenarian mother Labhe Bag.
After a video of the incident went viral, authorities of the bank suspended its manager Ajit Kumar Pradhan on June 15 following an instruction of the Odisha Government. He was placed under suspension for allegedly asking for physical verification of a 100-year-old woman to sanction the pension amount.

The  centenarian woman is an account holder of Centre’s Jan Dhan Yojana. After COVID-19 outbreak, the Centre had earlier announced Rs 500 monthly assistance for women Jan Dhan bank account holders from April to June.
