Banned foreign notes found in Srimandir Hundi in Odisha

Puri: Srimandir, the abode of Lord Jagannath, again hit the headlines not for servitors’ misbehaviour or violation of temple administration’s rules, but for the banned foreign currencies in temple Hundi here.

The banned foreign notes worth more than Rs 10 lakh were found in the Hundi placed in the Srimandir and the State Bank of India has returned the currencies to the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) citing those as banned notes.

The decision will be taken further about the banned notes after discussion at the managing committee, sources said.

Earlier, the donations in form of banned Rs 500 and 1,000 notes worth Rs 18 lakh were found in the Hundi following demonetisation by the Centre.

Recently, the SJTA burnt those notes after failing to exchange it from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Notably, the temple administration had sent the banned notes to the RBI twice after deadline for exchange. However, the RBI did not receive those.
