BDO among five convicted in graft cases in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: A Block Development Officer (BDO) and four others were convicted in graft cases in Odisha today.

Sarat Kumar Dash, a former Accountant at Jatni Municipality in Khurda district, was chargesheeted by the Odisha Vigilance in Bhubaneswar Vigilance Cell PS Case No.3/2015 U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1) (d)/7PC Act, 1988 for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 35,000 from a complainant for clearing the final bills towards the construction of a cement concrete road with drainage facility in Jatani Municipality.

Das was convicted by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhubaneswar and sentenced to 4 years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with the case. He was asked to pay a penalty of Rs10, 000 by the court. Nonpayment of the penalty would invite additional imprisonment for 2 months.

The court further sentenced Das to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 3 years and imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on him. He will undergo rigorous imprisonment for additional 2 months in case of nonpayment of the penalty amount.

Kailash Chandra Behera, Ex-Tahasiladar, Rourkela and the present BDO OF Ersama in Jagatsinghpur, was chargesheeted by the Odisha Vigilance in a case vide Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul TR No 125/2019 U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d)/7PC Act, 1988 for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a complainant for showing him undue favours.

Behera was convicted by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period 3 years. He was also told to pay Rs 5000 as fine. Nonpayment of the fine would invite additional imprisonment for 2 months.

Jayanti Pradhan, the former Sarpanch of Kulba in Sundargarh, was chargesheeted by the Odisha Vigilance in a case vide Special Judge, Vigilance, Sundargarh TR No 28/130 of 2016 U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d)/7PC Act,1988 for demanding and accepting bribe from a complainant for issuing Annapurna Antodaya Yojana card in his favour.

Pradhan was convicted by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Sundargarh and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 2 years in the case. Besides, she was told to pay a fine of RS 2000. She will undergo imprisonment for additional three months for nonpayment of the penalty amount.

The Vigilance court further sentenced Pradhan to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of one year and pay a fine of Rs 2000 in the case. Nonpayment of the fine will invite imprisonment for one more month.

Sarat Kumar Panda, Ex-ACF, Malkangiri (Retd) and G. M. Subash Chandra Bose (Forest Contractor), were chargesheeted by the Odisha Vigilance in a case vide Spl. Judge, Vigilance, Jeypore TR No.06/2009 U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) PC Act, 1988/420/468/471/477-A/379/218/119/120-B IPC and Section 27 of The Orissa Forest Act, 1972 for felling of trees from government land.

The duo was convicted in the case. Panda was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for a period of 2 years and was asked to pay a fine of Rs10,000 on each count U/s 13(2)/13(1)(c) of PC Act, 1988 and U/s 420/468/471 IPC. He will undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 6 months on each count U/s 13(2)/13(1)(c) of PC Act, 1988 and U/s 420/468/471 IPC for nonpayment of the penalty amount.

Bose was sentenced to 2 years of rigorous imprisonment and was directed to pay a penalty of Rs 10,000 on each count U/s 420/468/471/379 IPC. Nonpayment of the penalty would invite rigorous imprisonment for additional 6 months on each count.

Bose was further sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of one year and asked to pay a fine of Rs 2,000/- U/s 27 of Orissa Forest Act along with U/s 13(1) (c) r/w 13(2) PC Act, 1988. He will undergo rigorous imprisonment for additional two months for nonpayment of the penalty amount.
