Bhubaneswar:  Allegedly being betrayed by lover, a young woman consumed poison on premises of the Balipatna Police Station on outskirts of Bhubaneswar today.

The victim Rita Behera (24), daughter of Bichitrananda Behera of Somana Sasan village, is currently undergoing treatment at the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar.

According to reports, Rita and Gopal Behera, the adopted son of Kailash Behera of Somana Sasan village, were in love with each other since a long time. However, the path of their love was not smoother as the couple had stumbled upon conflicts many a time. Even, the 40-year-old Gopal was booked in a criminal case following a complaint by Rita at police station.

Source said that Rita had attacked Gopal with an iron rod to foil a rape bid on her at her house in September last year. In a counter case, the family of Gopal alleged that he was attacked by the young woman's family and was found abandoned with fractured legs and hands near an electrical transformer of the village.

Rita and Gopal were loving each other. Over the years they had developed physical intimacy, said victim's mother Sushma Behera.

Rita along with her father had visited the police station in the morning after she got to know about Gopal's wedding scheduled today. She had secretly kept a poison bottle with her and consumed it inside the police station, said the woman.

Police rescued the victim and rushed her to the Balipatna Community Health Centre. She was shifted to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar after receiving primary treatment at the CHC.
