Bhishma Ashtami festival is dedicated to ‘Bhishma’ of epic ‘Mahabharata’. It is believed that Bhishma departed from his soul on this day.

The festival is observed on the ‘ashtami’ (8th day) of the Shukla Paksha of the month of ‘Magha’ in the Hindu calendar.

This day is celebrated with great dedication in ISKCON temples and Lord Vishnu temples all over the country.

Tithi Ends: February 09, 2022 8:31 AM.

Rituals: People observe ‘Ekodishta Shraddha’ in the honour of Bhishma.

Devotees perform ‘tarpan’ on this day at the river banks. This ritual is dedicated to their ancestors and Bhishma.

Bhishma Ashtami Snan is an important ritual of this festival. Devotees take bath in holy rivers on this day.

There is a tradition of offering boiled rice and sesame seeds in the Ganga River.

Most of the devotees observe a strict fast on this day.

Significance: The day of Bhishma Ashtami is considered auspicious for any activity.

Childless couples and newly married couples observe a strict fast on this day to be blessed with child.
