Bhubaneswar: The Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha's Kendrapara district, which was closed for visitors from May 1 to July 31 in view of the mating and nesting season of saltwater crocodiles, reopened today.

The restrictions are imposed every year as sound created by boats carrying tourists can disturb the reptiles and make them violent.

Divisional Forest Officer Sudarshan Gopinath Yadav revealed that approximately 122 saltwater crocodiles have nested during this year's season in Bhitarkanika National Park.

Yadav mentioned that the forest department has taken steps to enhance tourism in the area. They have recently trained around 30 local youths to serve as guides for tourists.

To ensure a smooth experience for visitors, tourists intending to explore Bhitarkanika can make their bookings through the website www.ecotourodisha.com.

Additionally, in an effort to attract tourists from both India and abroad, the forest department has constructed rest houses in Dangamala, Habalikothi and Gupti.

In a bid to protect the environment, the forest department has also implemented a strict ban on the usage of plastic disposables in the protected areas. They have advised tourists against carrying polythene and littering plastic bottles and other items within the forest. This measure aims to maintain the ecological balance and safeguard the diverse flora and fauna of Bhitarkanika.
