Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced a new system, using which the civic body will monitor the real-time movement of garbage collection vehicles in the city.
This innovative solution allows for the real-time monitoring of waste collection vehicles, ensuring efficient and timely waste disposal processes.
Around 400 light commercial vehicles (LCVs) equipped with GPS technology, responsible for transporting household waste, now have their movements visualized at the integrated command center (ICC).
This state-of-the-art hub oversees various municipal services, and the integration of waste vehicle tracking promises to bring several benefits. BMC officials believe that this initiative will streamline waste collection procedures, curbing any mismanagement by sanitation personnel, preventing unnecessary traffic congestion caused by stalled vehicles, and guaranteeing punctual waste pickup and disposal.
BMC Commissioner Vijay Kulange remarked on the uniqueness of this approach, emphasizing the importance of timely waste collection. By keeping a watchful eye on the movements of each vehicle, the BMC aims to eliminate instances of waste collection delays or omissions that have been noted in the past.
Kulange highlighted that this tracking system will ensure continuous monitoring of every vehicle, deterring any such practices.
Officials from BMC further revealed that this monitoring mechanism will enable the assessment of individual LCV operators' performance. Those consistently neglecting their assigned duties can now be identified and relieved from their responsibilities.
The BMC is also in the process of expanding its fleet of waste collection vehicles, with plans to add 40 more LCVs to the existing 395. This expansion is in line with the intensified focus on doorstep waste collection and the promotion of waste segregation at the household level, a campaign that necessitates public awareness.
Starting from September 1, residents will have the ability to track waste vehicles' real-time movements through the Safa app.
By integrating the Safa app with the ICC, live updates regarding waste vehicle movements will be seamlessly delivered to users. This functionality will empower residents to raise concerns if there are delays or issues with LCV operators' attendance. The digital trail created by the app will provide concrete evidence that can be presented to sanitation authorities, making it easier to address any problems.
