Bhubaneswar: Jharpada jail inmate dies, tests COVID positive

Bhubaneswar: An undertrial prisoner, who was lodged in Jharpada Special Jail here, died while undergoing treatment at hospital. His swab sample later tested positive for COVID-19.

The deceased has been identified as Jugal Khandual. He was an accused in the Chit Fund Scam case and lodged in the jail since 2019.

According to reports, Khandual complained of fever following which he was admitted to the Capital Hospital here on September 13. He was later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

Khandual breathed his last while undergoing treatment at the hospital. His swab sample was collected for COVID-19 test and it tested positive for the virus.

The deceased had come in contact with several inmates in the jail. The jail authorities have written to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) for COVID-19 test of the inmates.
