Bhubaneswar: The foul smell emanating from the Temporary Transit Station (TTS) near Sainik School in Odisha capital has become stronger during the last several days, causing severe inconvenience for residents of the nearby areas and commuters.
The BMC has been dumping garbage at the TTS after the civic body stopped the dumping near Daruthenga village on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. With tonnes of dumped waste, the TTS has now become a garbage hill, making the stench reach Gadakana Mouza, Mancheswar, Dhirikuti slum, VSS Nagar, Rangamatia, Patia, Rasulgarh and Palasuni areas of the city.
The recent rainfall in the city due to a cyclonic storm worsened the situation.
"While ascertaining the cause of the intense foul smell, we came to know that churning of the waste by shredder machines is the reason behind the incident. The churning activity has been stopped for some days while the waste will be allowed to dry up. It is quite important to process the garbage as stopping it will lead to piling up," said BMC commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange.
As many as three machines have been roped in by the civic body for the processing of waste.
