Angul: The Royal Bengal tiger relocated from Madhya Pradesh to Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Odisha was released into the wild here today.

The big cat was kept inside a specially designed enclosure under CCTV surveillance at Satkosia since June 21.

The wild animal was released into the forest for free movement after medical examination.

Sources said that the Royal Bengal tiger known as 'Mahabir' will be put under close watch through a radio collar attached to its neck during period of tranquilization. Three special teams have been formed to monitor the tiger's movement inside the reserve.

Each team will be provided an antenna, which will be connected with satellite, to trace the wild animal, a senior official in the forest department said.

The VHF will also be provided to each team that will send the information to the control room. The forest officials will have close watch on the tiger, staying just 3-4 km away from its habitat, he added.

Mahabir was brought to Satkosia Tiger Reserve from Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh on June 21 as part of inter-state tiger relocation exercise to increase the tiger population at Satkosia Tiger Reserve, which has only two tigers at present.

Later on June 28, a Royal Bengal tigress was relocated to the reserve from Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The tigress will join Mahabir soon in the wild.
