Biggest ever eviction drive launched in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar, Feb 2:

A joint team of Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and General Administration (GA) departments today conducted what is billed as the biggest ever eviction drive in the Odisha capital.

With Commissionerate Police in tow, officials of the three agencies rushed to the site near Kanya Ashram in Patia area under Chandrasekharpur Mouza to free government land measuring about 30 acres encroached upon by locals.

“As per the order of the special secretary of Revenue and secretary GA departments, around 250 pucca, asbestos, thatched roof, tin sheeted houses would be demolished. Illegal encroachment in 30 acres area would be removed. This is the biggest such eviction so far jointly conducted by the departments in the capital city,” liaison officer of BDA Subhransu Sekhar Mohanty said.

“We tried to demolish the illegal encroachment at least eight times in the past. But the eviction could not be carried out due to stiff opposition by  a large number of locals. Police failed to provide sufficient force to maintain law and order situation on earlier occasions, ” Mohanty said.

Seven excavators have been engaged in the eviction drive indulging 40 squads.

The demolition drive was supervised by Enforcement Officer-I, BDA, Debaprasad Dash and deputy secretary, BMC Subhransu Mishra.

Commissionerate Police has deployed 17 platoons of  police force, two additional DCPs, two ACPs and eight IICs at the site to maintain law & order during the demolition drive.
