Bike stunts to face painting, know how Odisha capital celebrated R-Day

Bhubaneswar: It was a sight to behold as young boys and girls of a city-based Maharishi Daredevils rode down Mahatma Gandhi Marg in Odisha capital, creating some stunning formations.

With national flags in hand and faces full of pride and love for the nation, they drew the loudest cheer from the crowd during the Republic Day parade this morning.

“We have been practising hard to perfect this one formation since last two months,” said Akansha, a member of the group.

This was her third performance on Republic Day. “The group members are students from various colleges in Bhubaneswar and it’s an honour for all of us to be performing here as daredevils,” she added.

Krishna, a year-and-a-half-old child, looked all happy and gay with the tricolour in his hand. While people jostled for space trying to catch a glimpse of the show, the little one was content with his father humming a song to him.

Likewise, Padmalaya, a first-timer to the parade, said it was a wonderfully put-up show. “Such events instill a sense of national pride,” she said.

The morning was unusually active with enthusiastic faces that had tricolour painted on them and children climbing up the trees and bamboo boundaries to peep through the crowd. “There was a small face-painting going on, right beside the PMG Marg so some of us got our cheeks painted. These are some of the moments when we get to celebrate our country’s colours,” expressed Abhishek.

Police force, army, air wing, traffic police, other government employees and school students marched along on the road in perfect synchronization. The bagpipers added to the rhythm. Government organizations like OMC, Nalco, Rourkela Steel Plant, Mahanadi Coalfields and others had their tableau represented which was followed by spell-binding performances by school students. A dance performance depicting the brave queen of Jhansi was the highlight of the entire dance show.

Republic Day, the day when the constitution of India came into effect, kicked off in Odisha Capital the grandest way with governor S.C. Jamir unfurling the ‘tiranga’ while pigeons fluttered around.
