Bhubaneswar: Amid bad odor that has enveloped the entire city due to the garbage crisis, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will set up biomethane gas plants in different locations on the outskirts of the state capital for waste management.

The Empowerment Committee of Infrastructure headed by the Chief Secretary has approved the proposal, which was cleared by the BMC at a meeting on January 6 this year.

Following approval, the BMC has decided to set the plants at 4 places on the premises of the sewerage treatment plants (STPs).

According to reports, around 200 MT of wastes will be processed at these proposed plants to generate 4 tonnes of gas a day.

The biogas project will be functional in PPP mode, for which the BMC has invited a tender to select a partner firm.

Sources said that there will be an estimated expenditure of Rs 25.30 crore for the establishment of each plant and a total investment of Rs 100 crore will be incurred which will be borne by the concerned entity. The BMC only will provide the land for setting up the plants.

Reports said that the civic body has allotted 2 acre to 2.5 acre land for each proposed plant in STP centres located at Rokat, Meherpalli, Kochilaput and Basuaghai. The plants will process only wet wastes that will be provided by the BMC. The biogas to be generated from these proposed plants will be used in BMC vehicles to curb its fuel expenses.
