Berhampur, Feb 11:

The state is witnessing an unprecedented rise in pre-poll violence ahead of the three-tier panchayat polls in Odisha as a Biju Janata Dal worker has been shot at today in Ganjam district.

According to reports, the injured identified as Jagannath Patra aka Jaga Patra was shot at in Mundamarai market under Dharakote block in the district by unidentified miscreants while he was passing through the busy marketplace.

Three bike-borne miscreants pumped as many bullets into Patra’s body. He took bullets on his face, diaphragm region and right hand.

A critically injured Pata was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. Later, he was shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

Local police have begun investigation into the incident.

It may be recalled that a BJP worker was shot dead in Tarabha village in Dhenkanal district earlier this month over putting up of election posters. Three accused have been arrested so far in connection with the incident.
