BJP maintains winning impetus in 2nd phase Odisha panchayat poll

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Feb 15:

The panchayat poll result trend has heightened concerns of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has replicated the winning momentum in the second phase election which concluded today.

Though the ruling BJD has maintained its leading position during the second phase poll too, the BJP candidates have put up an impressive show at the Zilla Parishad election.

The trends indicate BJD of winning 97 ZP seats, BJP capturing 58 posts and Congress maintaining its third position with 16 seats at 17 5 zones polled across the state.

As per unofficial figures, BJP won six of the four ZP posts in Bolangir and the rest went to BJD in the second phase. In the first phase, BJP had won six zones and BJD at only one.

The saffron party has continued with the winning spree in Sambalpur too. The BJP won three zones and BJD reversing the sequence as in the first phase polls.

The party’s outcome has remained impermeable in party supremo Naveen Patnaik’s home district Ganjam as BJD pocketed 16 of the 17 ZP seats polled today. The BJP got the remaining seat.

The trend in Malkangiri indicated complete rout of BJD as BJP bagged two and Congress one of the three ZP seats polled today. Similarly, BJD won two and BJP one in Sonepur.

In Nayagar, BJP swept three of the four seats whereas the other one was won by BJD. The BJP, however, couldn’t manage to get any ZP seats in Nuapada as BJD and Congress shared two and one seats amongst themselves.

In the coastal district of Khurda, BJD managed to put a spanner in BJP’s plans as it won five of the six seats and the rest was bagged by the latter. Balasore produced similar results for BJD as it captured all the eight zones polled today. Same was the tally in Bhadrak district which polled in seven zones – all bagged by BJD.

On the other hand, BJP failed to open account in Koraput. Of the six seats, four went to BJD and the remaining two were won by Congress candidates.

Kandhamal voters were judicious enough to spare three ZP posts to BJD, BJP and Congress each.

However, Mayurbhanj continued to paint itself saffron in the second phase too as BJP won 10 of the 12 zones and the remaining shared by BJD and an Independent candidate.

It may be mentioned here that the BJD won 103, BJP 71 seats and Congress 10 of the 188 seats that have already gone to polls in the first phase of the Zilla Parishad elections held on Monday.

In the last panchayat poll, the BJD had won 656, Congress 126 and BJP had won a mere 36 seats of the total 854 Zilla Parishad seats.

Notably, these above figures have been compiled from data provided by polling agents of the respective political parties present at the polling booths during counting of votes. The State Election Commission (SEC) would declare the official results after the final counting of votes after the culmination of five-phase panchayat polls, including re-polls in the state. The schedule of official declaration of results is: Gram Panchayat – February 23, Panchayat Samiti – February 25, and Zila Parishad – February 25.
