Blast at stone quarry unit in Odisha’s Rayagada: Owner, sons arrested

Rayagada: The police today arrested another three persons including the owner of a stone quarry and crusher unit in Odisha’s Rayagada district in connection with an explosion occurred on October 16. Earlier, the blaster of the stone quarry was arrested in connection with the case.

Due to the explosion at the stone quarry at Okilguda village near Gunupur in the district three persons died at the spot and nine others were injured critically.

Based on a complaint filed by one Malku Sabara from Puttasing village, the police launched an investigation into the incident.

A police official said one Pradeep Jogi was found to be the owner of Okilguda stone quarry and his father Ghasi Jogi is having the ownership of the stone crusher unit adjacent to the quarry. Pratap Jogi, elder son of Ghasi Jogi was looking after the day to day functioning of the crusher unit and quarry as it was their family business.

Harischandra Gamango of Soura Pradhaniguda was employed as a blaster at the stone quarry. The owner of the stone quarry used to procure the explosives from outside, the police official added.

Following the incident, the accused persons fled the locality. However, the police arrested Harischandra on October 20 and formed a team to nab the other accused.

Today accused Pratap Jogi, Pradeep Jogi and Ghasi Jogi were arrested by police for offence under Sections of the ES act-1908.

Also, the police seized explosive materials, compressor fitted in the tractor, drilling rod and machine, four vehicles and stone quarry lease agreement copies and other documents.

Further investigation into the incident is on.
