Body of suspected ‘sorcerer’ recovered from river in Odisha

Police and Fire Brigade personnel today finally fished out the decomposed body of Bhima Rao Ataka of Veja village under Kolanara block in Odisha’s Rayagada district, who was thrown into the river alive by fellow villagers on Monday.

Ataka was thrown into the river Nagabali alive, packed in a gunny bag after being severely beaten up by some villagers, who suspected him to have been a practitioner of black magic, police said.

“Bhima Rao Ataka’s body, packed in a sack along with heavy stones, was found today from the bed of the river. The body bears several injury marks”, said Bikram Keshari Jaipuria, investigating officer, Kolanara police station.

Two persons have been detained in this connection and investigations are on, Jaipuria said.

Police said the attackers held Ataka responsible for the death of a 15-year-old boy of the village.
