Bollywood calling for Odisha kid drummer!

Bhubaneswar: Abhishek Sahoo, who wowed one and all and made a name for himself as an exceptional drummer at the age of 10, has got a ticket to Bollywood.

The 10-year-old of Cuttack in Odisha has bagged a role in the movie ‘Love Season’ featuring popular actor Rahul Roy of Aashiqui fame in the lead.

Popular Punjabi filmmaker Jagir Boparai, who is directing the movie, confirmed the news.

Speaking to Odisha Sun Times, Boparai said: “Abhishek will play the younger version of one of the protagonists played by Rahul Roy. He perfectly fits the character.”

When asked how he spotted Abhishek, the filmmaker said it all happened through the internet and social media. “I was looking for a child artist and came across some videos of Abhishek on YouTube as he had participated in different TV shows as a drummer,” he added.

Explaining further what led him cast the Cuttack boy, the director said Abhishek stood out for his innocence and positivity, which was a requirement for the character.

“He (Abhishek) is immensely talented and this with his excellent drumming skills make for a killer combination, which will boost his career in the long run,” the filmmaker observed.

Abhishek’s father Alok Sahoo, who accompanied his son to Chandigarh to sign the deal, is a proud man.

“It’s indeed a big news for us and we are very happy that my son has got a chance in Bollywood,” said Alok, a businessman.

The film will go on floors by the end of January and will be shot at various locations in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. It scheduled for June 2018 release, Boparai informed.

Abhishek, a Class V student of SCB Medical Public School in Cuttack, has won numerous awards as a drummer both at state and national levels. “I want to do both drumming and acting,” said an elated Abhishek, who has also acted in Odia TV serials and a documentary film.

The little drummer is also involved in social work as he along with his father has been donating old clothes to the poor and even spending a share of his prize money on social causes.

He had also got an invitation to participate in Britain’s Got Talent show in November last year, but couldn’t make it due to financial constraints, his father said.

Appreciating his thoughts and noble gesture at such an early age, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik met Abhishek yesterday evening at the State Secretariat.

“Selfie with a star! Delighted to meet child prodigy Abhishek Sahoo of Cuttack who has made a name as an ace drummer in the country & internationally. Apart from his exceptional talent, I was moved by his passion for social service at such young age. Wished him all success in life,” Naveen tweeted.
