Boy’s death in drain: NHRC asks Odisha Chief Secy to provide compensation

Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the Chief Secretary of Odisha to provide compensation in connection with the death of a nine-year-old boy in a drain in Cuttack city.

The rights body asked the Chief Secretary to provide Rs 2 lakh compensation to the deceased boy’s family and submit a report in this regard within six weeks.

The NHRC pronounced the order while hearing a petition filed by a human rights activist from Pipli area in Puri district in connection with the incident.

As per the case records, Joseph Sahani (9) died after he fell into an open drain in Bidanasi area of Cuttack city on January 15.

The petitioner had blamed the civic authorities of Cuttack city for the incident and sought compensation for the victim’s family.
