BTech student drowns while taking bath in river Mahanadi in Odisha’s Cuttack

Cuttack: A youth met his watery grave while he was taking a bath in Hatigada ghat of river Mahanadi near Tulasipur locality in Cuttack, during the 10th-day (Dasah) ritual of his grandfather today.

The deceased was identified as Rupak Banerjee, a 22-year-old BTech student in a private college. Rupak belonged to Sector 6 of CDA in the city.

According to a source, Rupak was swept away by the river water when he was taking a bath and he went missing leading to his death. The youth could not be saved despite attempts.

On being informed, a team of local fire services personnel reached the spot and launched a frantic search operation. After striving for more than an hour, the body of Rupak was traced and later it was fished out from the river water. He was taken to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack where doctors declared the youth ‘dead’.

A pall of gloom descended on the family after news of Rupak’s untimely death spread.
