Burmese python caught in fishing net in Odisha’s Puri gets new life

Puri: In a major breakthrough in treatment of a nine-feet-long Burmese python, which was caught in fishing net in Puri district last year, the veterinary doctors in Odisha added another feather to the cap of their success.

The snake got new life after undergoing 11-month-long treatment at Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) in Bhubaneswar. It has been shifted to Nandankanan zoo today after it recovered from illness.

The Burmese python was caught in fishing net at Bira Ramachandrapur in Sakshigopal in November 2016. It sustained a deep injury on its body while trying to come out of the fishing net.

The snake helpline had brought the huge snake to OUAT after rescuing it from the village.

According to OUAT experts, the success the doctors achieved in treating the python for 11 months is the first in world. They set a record to treat the python, which had 11-inch-deep injury on its body, within 10 months.
