Candidates who lost in 2019 Odisha polls

Bhubaneswar: Even as Modi wave and Naveen’s charm created magic in the elections 2019, many heavyweights in Odisha bite the dust in the polls.

Although the Naveen-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) retained the power for the fifth consecutive term sweeping the Assembly polls with over 100 seats, the party lost several seats with low margin.

The poll results brought huge setback for the party from Puri district where its two heavyweights — Maheswar Mohanty and Sanjay Das Burma — miserably lost to BJP candidates.

Though the BJP was elevated to second spot in Assembly with winning 23 seats, it lost two seats from Brajarajnagar and Padampur, which were won by the saffron party in Assembly Elections 2014.

While BJD’s Rabi Narayan Nanda, Mangala Kisan, Jogesh Kumar Singh, Rasewari Panigrahi, Lal Bihari Himirika and Bibhuti Balabantray were defeated in the polls, the BJP candidates Laxman Bag, Susanta Kumar Pradhan and Bibhuti Bhusan Pradhan lost the elections.

The Congress failed miserably to win people’s trust this time too. The party chief Niranjan Patnaik faced huge setback as he lost two seats following which he tendered his resignation from the post. Similarly, the party’s winning candidates like Chiranjib Biswal could not be able to retain the seat in Jagatsinghpur.

In Lok Sabha, a few major constituencies were slipped from BJD’s hand. The party clinched only 12 seats in the polls 2019, where as its winning figure was 20 in Elections 2014.

The BJP won 8 Lok Sabha seats with a gain of seven seats this time in Odisha.

Meanwhile, the Congress managed to open its account from Koraput Lok Sabha Constituency, only one seat gain against previous polls.

While the BJD leaders including Rabindra Jena, Pushpendra Singhdeo, Arup Patnaik, Prasanna Acharya, Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, Debasish Marndi and Nalinikant Pradhan lost the Lok Sabha polls, BJP’s Sambit Patra, Baijayant Panda and Balabhadra Majhi failed after giving tough fight to the opponents. Congress also had bitter taste from Nabarangpur with Pradeep Majhi’s defeat in the Lok Sabha polls.
