Cannabis worth around Rs 2.5 crore seized in Malkangiri district

Chitrakonda: In a major crackdown, local police seized a huge cache of cannabis (Ganja) following a raid in Bhaluguda forest near Kapatuti village under Chitrakonda block in Malkangiri district, last night.

Valuation of the contraband item in the open market would be around Rs 2.5 crore, which was meant to be smuggled elsewhere. Acting on a tip-off, a police team conducted a raid leading to the seizure.

According to a police source, smugglers of the cannabis could see the police team from a considerable distance and could manage to flee from the spot leaving behind a number of sacks packed with Ganja, taking advantage of darkness prevailing around. Weight of the seized Ganja is about 2.5 tonnes.

“None of the Ganja smugglers could be arrested. However, police have registered a case and launched a detailed probe in this connection,” Chitrakonda police station IIC Mukund Melaka expressed.
