Capital punishment for Odisha man, lifer for son in triple murder

Bhubaneswar: A man was awarded death penalty while his son was sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of three members of a family in Sambalpur district of Odisha on October 21, 2020.

Kuchinda Additional District Judge (ADJ) Rajkishore Lenka also imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh each on the convict father-son duo Naveen Dehury (55) and Hemananda Dehury (22), said Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) Rabindra Kumar Nayak.

As per the case records, Naveen and Hemanand had killed Giridhari Sahu of Lapada village under Bamra block of Sambalpur district with an axe on a paddy field over some issues in the afternoon of October 21, 2020.

The father-son duo also hacked Giridhari’s wife Sabitri Sahu (35) and his mother Pirabati Behera (55) to death with the axe while they were collecting water from a tube well at Lapada village on the same day.

On being informed, Mahulapali police reached the spot and arrested the father-son duo.

The Kuchinda ADJ convicted the father-son duo on the basis of circumstantial evidence and statements of 20 witnesses to the case, said the APP.

The judge announced death penalty to Naveen, the main accused, by terming the triple murder as a rarest of the rare crimes. He also awarded life imprisonment to Naveen’s son Hemanand in the case, he added.
