Bahanaga, May 2:
A carcass of a 5ft-long dolphin was recovered from Nakdapahi in Talpada panchayat under Bahanaga block in Odisha’s Balasore district today.
The 5ft-long dead dolphin’s carcass weighing 50 kg with a girth of 2ft was found floating in Kantiachira river which falls into the Bay of Bengal, reports said.
On sighting the dolphin’s carcass floating in the river, locals informed Forest department officials.
Forest officials suspect the mammal to have died in the sea for some unknown reason while its carcass could have been swept into the Kantachira river.
On being informed by locals Ranger Prafulla Mallick of Chandipur Forest range accompanied by a team of Forest department officials arrived at the spot and have seized the carcass.
Forest department has seized the dead dolphin’s carcass and has sent it to Gopalpur for post-mortem to ascertain the cause of its death.
Though it’s not yet clear how the dolphin died, it’s apprehended that it could have been killed after being hit by a boat or a motor boat.
Notably, a few months back carcass of a crocodile was found in Kantiachira river.
While fishing is banned from April 1 to June 1, several boats and motor boats are fishing on Balasore coast while authorities have turned mute spectators.
