    A TRIBUTE: Dr KP MISRA

Reading about Dr Misra’s passing away brought back a rush of memories.

I first saw Dr K.P Misra in 1973. He was a reputed Cardiologist working in the Ispat General Hospital at the steel-city of Rourkela and I was in Class IX. Dr. Misra had returned from USA after completing his post-graduate studies. Neil Armstrong had landed on the Moon a few years before that, and saga of Apollo-11 had caught the imagination of youngsters. Dr. Misra had visited NASA and had taken photos of the facilities at Cape Canaveral. He has transformed the photos into slides and he visited our school, The Ispat Public School, and presented a 2 –hour talk of the Apollo mission. His knowledge of the Apollo mission, along with interesting anecdotes cast a spell on us – senior school class students. I remember his talk even today.

Later, around the same time, he was invited to speak on Values for the members of the Interact Club of Rourkela, of which I was member. He, again, floored the young audience with his simple examples and philosophy – a very different subject from Science. He used to deliver discourses on Gita for the public in Rourkela – it was always well attended and my father would attend those regularly. He would say Dr. Misra was a “Guru” on Gita!

When I read an article in The Hindu’s Sunday Magazine in 2006, on Hypertension , written by a Dr Misra, I mailed him to ask him if he was the same who had come to my school all those years ago. And he responded immediately saying , “Yes, I am the same Dr. K.P. Misra.”

Even after all these years, I still recall the quiet but unmistakable magnetism of the man. May he rest in peace!
