Cash award to Odisha sprinters ahead of Asian Athletic C’ship

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today awarded four Odia sprinters – Dutee Chand, Srabani Nanda, Jauna Murmu and Amiya Mallick – at the Kalinga Stadium here today, ahead of the Asian Athletics Championship.

Patnaik presented a cheque of Rs 3 lakh to the four ace sprinters from the state who are a part of the 95-member Indian contingent.

He wished the five athletes from Odisha who have found place in the squad.

The Chief Minister reviewed the infrastructural facilities at the stadium and inaugurated the newly-laid synthetic track for warm up. Olympian Anuradha Biswal, Asian Games silver medallist Pranati Mishra, Sushma Behera, former Indian women’s football captain Shradhanjali Samantaray were among those who ran on the new track’

On the occasion, Patnaik also unveiled the medals for the championships.

Sports and Youth Services Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera took Chief Minister on battery-operated golf cart round the stadium where the grand event will begin from July 5.

Notably, the state government took up the 90-day challenge and completed the renovation and other works of the stadium in a record time.
