Centre grants Rs 4 cr for genetic improvement of fish at ICAR-CIFA

Bhubaneswar: The Central government sanctioned Rs 4 crore for the genetic improvement of fish at ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) in Bhubaneswar. This was informed by Union Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Pratap Chandra Sarangi after review of various field facilities at ICAR-CIFA campus here.

The Rs 4-crore grant has been sanctioned to the ICAR-CIFA under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. Worth mentioning, the institute has been carrying out research on 25 varieties of fish and pearl culture.

Besides, Sarangi announced a grant of Rs 366 crore for fish farming sector under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. The Centre will provide Rs 110 crore whereas States and beneficiaries will contribute Rs 246 crore and Rs 180 crore to the fund respectively, he added.

The Centre has targets to achieve production of 22 million tonnes fish by 2024 and double the income of farmers by 2022.
