Centres urges Odisha CM for land to set up Paika Rebellion memorial

Bhubaneswar: Centre urged Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to provide 50 acre land in the foothills of Barunei in Khordha district to set up a memorial in commemoration of Paika Rebellion.

In a letter to Patnaik, Union Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma requested him to identify 50 acre land either in Khordha or in foothills of Barunei to construct a permanent infrastructure on completion of 200 years of Paika Rebellion.

“Paika Rebellion of Khordha in Odisha is an event of great historical importance to the State. It is therefore proposed to create a permanent infrastructure in the form of a memorial in the State,” Sharma wrote.

He also proposed to set up a chair in memory of Paika Rebellion at Utkal University.

In a separate letter to Utkal University Vice Chancellor Soumendra Mohan Patnaik, the Union Minister suggested him to submit a proposal for setting up a chair to mark the historical event at the varsity.

The expenditure for the proposed chair will be spent from the interest of the corpus fund released by the Centre for the purpose.
