Chhattisgarh HC grants conditional bail to former Odisha MLA Anup Sai in double murder case

Bhubaneswar: Chhattisgarh High Court today granted conditional bail to former Brajarajnagar MLA Anup Sai in connection with the murder of a woman and her daughter in 2016.

A court in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district had awarded life imprisonment to the former MLA in April this year in connection with the double murder case. However, the Raigarh court had acquitted Sai’s driver Burdhan Toppo in the case.

The former legislator and his driver had been arrested in February 2020 in connection with the murder of Kalpana Das and her minor daughter at Hamirpur forests in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh in 2016. The Chhattisgarh police had interrogated around 700 people in connection with the double murder case.

According to police, the former MLA was in a relationship with Kalpana. He was allegedly staying with Kalpana and her daughter in a building in Bhubaneswar.

Sai allegedly hatched a plot to eliminate Kalpana when she insisted on marriage and asked for a share in the former MLA’s property.

Sai reportedly took Kalpana and her daughter to Chhattisgarh in a car in May 2016. The mother-daughter duo was fatally assaulted at Hamirpur forests.

The former MLA and his driver reportedly drove the car on Kalpana and her daughter several times to destroy their identities.

A year later, the identities of the victims were ascertained by the police, sources said.
