Chief Secy orders for strict implementation of Odisha Boat Rules-2004

Bhubaneswar: Insisting on ‘no boat journey sans life jacket’, Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena today ordered for strict implementation of Odisha Boat Rules-2004 in the State.

Wearing a life jacket is the moral responsibility of a person, who is to travel in a boat. Actions will be taken against wrongdoers for any violation of the rule, the Chief Secretary said while reviewing boat capsize tragedies that occurred in the past days in Odisha.

Despite the fact that Odisha Boat Rules-2004 was previously introduced by the state Commerce and Transport department, it is seen that those norms are not being properly implemented. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has emphasised at different times on strict implementation of the rules, Jena stated.

Travel in a boat or any other watercraft on seas, rivers, lakes, reservoirs or any other water body with a life jacket has been made mandatory. Moreover, boatmen must use lifebuoy (safety equipment) during a journey. Campaigns should be conducted to make people aware in this regard.

Local block development officers (BDOs), tehsildars and fire services officials are supposed to inspect the strict implementation of the Odisha Boat Rules-2004 on a regular basis, the Chief Secretary said.
