Child marriage: Minor girl rescued in Odisha’s Puri

Puri, May 8:

District child welfare officials today rescued a minor girl while she was being married off by her parents in Odisha’s pilgrim town Puri.

Acting on a tip-off, Juvenile Justice Board member Jayashri Mohapatra, Childline director Debasish Rath and District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Manoj Tripathy raided a house in Ramachandi Sahi in Puri and rescued the minor girl.

According to reports, since the minor girl didn’t appear the matriculation examination this year and had refused to continue with her studies, her parents, who are very poor and earn a living with much difficulty had decided to marry her off.
