Chilika boat tragedy: Odisha rights body seeks report

The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) today sought a report from two departments of the state government and four top officials over the boat capsize incident in Chilika lake in which four persons died.

The rights body sought report within three weeks from Tourism and Commerce & Transport departments, Chilika Development Authority (CDA), Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), Southern Division, IG, Southern Range and Ganjam Collector.

Notably, four persons had drowned to death when a boat carrying 29 passengers capsized in Chilika lake in Ganjam district on December 10.

The mishap took place when the boat carrying as many as 29 tourists was on its way to Ghantasila hill from Sabulia ghat through Chilika lake. However, the boat lost control and overturned midway after covering a distance of 2 km from shore.

The boat was overloaded which lead to the mishap. Besides, the boat had holes in it owing which water entered into it, Chief Executive of Chilika Development Authority (CDA), P Krishna Mohan had said.
