Bhubaneswar: Amid allegations of ragging at different educational and training institutions in the State in recent past, a four-member team of the Ragging Free Campus Abhiyan (RFCA) raised the issue before Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal during a meeting today.
The Ragging Free Campus Abhiyan Convener Tejeswara Parida, Co-Convener Mir Mohammed Ali, Co-Convener Nalini Kanta Nayak and Member Shreeya Mishra discussed with the Odisha Governor about the ragging menace during the 20-minute meeting.
Before the Governor they also submitted a two-page memorandum along with a three-page suggestions letter that was submitted to the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC).
During the meeting the Governor assured the Ragging Free Campus Abhiyan delegation that he would look into the suggestions given by the civil society organization and take appropriate action.
He also advised the delegation to create awareness among students on the ragging menace through different campaigns and programmes.
On July 5, a first year student of ANM Training centre in Deogarh lodged a written complaint with the CDMO Deogarh about ragging to her since last three months. She also wished to discontinue her study and training due to ragging.
On July 2, a Plus III first year girl student died by suicide due to ragging at Karubaki Hostel of BJB Autonomous College, Bhubaneswar. Her suicide note cited ragging as the reason behind taking the extreme step.
In another such incident, a first year MBBS student from Karnal, Haryana lost his life due to ragging on April 22, 2022, in the boys’ hostel of Bhim Bhoi Medical College and Hospital, Balangir. His WhatsApp chat reportedly mentioned about ragging by seniors on him.
