The Odisha government today announced the extension of the closure of schools by six more days until April 26 as heat wave conditions prevailed across the state.

In view of the unprecedented heat wave across the state, the state government had ordered the closure of all the schools till April 20. As the heat wave conditions continued to prevail with western Odisha districts being the worst-hit, the suspension of classes has been extended until April 26.

However, the mid-day meal scheme will continue in 27 drought-affected districts in the state. A state-level steering committee meeting held here decided on it. For this, the state government would spend Rs 81 crore towards the scheme to be continued during the summer holidays in 36, 000 schools, sources said.

“The closure of schools has been extended until April 26 as the heat wave conditions continue,” Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra said.

The decision comes after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the mercury will further soar after Wednesday.

Yesterday, Regional Meteorological office Director Sarat Chandra Sahu said the mercury is set to rise further from April 22.

Notably, the state government last month had directed the schools to conduct morning classes from April 2 till May 1 as heat wave conditions intensified in the state. The schools were directed to conduct classes from 6.30 am to 10.30 am.
