Bhubaneswar: A jawan of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) shot himself dead by using his service revolver in Koraput district of Odisha in the wee hours of today.

The deceased has been identified as S Dillip, a resident of Dwarka area in Gujarat.

Dillip, who was deployed in Rajput area under Sunabeda police limits in Koraput, shot himself below his chin by using his service revolver at around 3.40 am today, sources said.

The incident took place while Dillip was guarding gate no. 2 of their camp at Rajput. He died on the spot, sources added.

On being informed, Sunabeda police reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem.

“We are probing the incident. We are yet to find out the reason behind the CoBRA jawan’s suicide,” said Sunabeda Inspcetor In-Charge Ramani Ranjan Dalei.

Notably, the Centre had raised the CoBRA in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to tackle the Naxal menace in several states in India, including Odisha, in 2008.
