Computerised DL, vehicle fitness testing centre soon in Odisha

Cuttack: A new system will be introduced soon for providing a driving license (DL) and vehicle fitness certificate to the applicants through computer test in Odisha.

The State government in this regard is going to set up State’s first computerised vehicle fitness testing centre near Naraj in Cuttack district in April 2019.

The initiative aims at bringing transparency in the regional transportation system in the State.

Sources in the transport department said that the driver will not be entitled to avail the DL and fitness certificate if he fails in the computer test.

The authorities have sanctioned Rs 18 crore for opening up of the centre at Naraj. The proposed centre will also be set up in Berhampur and Rourkela.

The applicant will get a report about the condition of the vehicle’s lights, horns, brakes, tyres and clutches through a computer test. The fitness certificate will be issued on basis of the pass or fail report of the driver.

Earlier, the process was done manually. With setting up the computerised fitness centre, all the tests of the vehicles will be conducted through a computer for an error-free report.

Similarly, an Automatic Driving Training System (ADTS) under 35 RT offices will be opened soon. The budgetary provision of Rs 30 crore has been sanctioned for the proposed set up.

According to reports, the driver violating the traffic and motor vehicle rules will face e-challan. In case of violating the rules for the second time, the fine amount will be doubles. In this regard, total 194 enforcement officers have been provided an e-challan machine each at 35 RTOs.

All the officers have been imparted training to strictly implement the rules. The e-challan device will be connected with the transport commissioner office’s server to get data about the driver’s previous fine details and information. The driver can pay fine amount using his/her ATM debit card.
