Cong stages walkout after Odisha CM makes statement on Smitarani issue

Bhubaneswar: Din over the death of Haridaspur village level worker (VLW) Smitarani Biswal continued to rock Odisha Assembly today as Congress members staged walkout following Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s statement over the matter.

The CM said the death was attributed to suicide as per the post-mortem report. The Congress MLAs then staged walkout demanding a CBI/SIT probe into the death of the woman.

Earlier, Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra in a statement during discussion over the incident in the House said post-mortem report suggests that Smitarani Biswal committed suicide and her death occurred due to asphyxiation.

Police arrested Rupesh Bhadra under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC and registered a case in this connection, the minister said, adding that further probe is underway.

On the other hand, uproarious scenes prevailed today on the second day of Winter Session of the Odisha Assembly as Opposition BJP and Congress members created ruckus demanding discussion over the death of Smitarani and CBI investigation into the case.

The pandemonium resulted in multiple adjournments as Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro adjourned the House initially till 12 noon soon after commencement of Question Hour, later for 30 minutes and further till 4.12 pm after Congress members staged walkout.
