Koraput, Sept 26:
A well-known Congress leader of Koraput district in Odisha was shot dead this evening.
According to reports, five to seven unidentified persons reached the house of Jiban Patnaik, a senior Congress leader and former block chairman of Pottangi at Sunki under Pottangi police station limits around 8 PM and fired indiscrimately at him.
Patnaik was killed on the spot and the assailants fled soon after committing the crime, SDPO (Sunabdeda) V R Rao said.
Following information, senior police officials of the district had rushed to Patnaik's house for an on-the-spot investigation.
The reason behind the murder was not immediately known.
However, the police, who suspect the involvement of Maoists in the incident, have launched a massive manhunt to nab the killers. However, there is no conclusive evidence as of now to suggest the Congress leader was killed by the Maoists, the SDPO conceded.
