Congress women activists hurl eggs, tomatoes at Maharathy’s residence

Bhubaneswar: Tension ran high in the State capital after activists of Odisha Pradesh Mahila Congress hurled tomatoes and eggs at the Government quarters of Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy here today while staging a demonstration protesting the latter’s comments on the acquittal verdict in Pipili gang rape incident.

Demanding the Minister’s resignation, the women activists staged demonstration holding brooms in front of his official quarters. The situation turned violent when the activists scuffled with police personnel when the latter tried to disperse the crowed. Later, the cops detained 40 activists from the spot and registered a case in this connection.

Meanwhile, the BJP has threatened to take to streets if the the Minister is not suspended from his position in next 24 hours. Terming Maharathy’s comment on Pipili gang rape incident as unfortunate and saddening, BJP leader Aparajita Sarangi demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident.

Maharathy hailed the Bhubaneswar ADJ court’s verdict in 2011 Pipili gang rape and murder case and said, “My sympathies are with the victim but I honour the court’s judgement. I had then told that truth will prevail.”
