Construction of Berhampur-Jeypore second Biju Expressway to start soon, complete in 3 years

Mohana: Construction of 305 kilometre-long second Biju Expressway connecting Berhampur and Jeypore will start soon. Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, 5T Secretary VK Pandian today discussed with the officials concerned and asked them to expedite the process.

The 5T Secretary is on a two-day official visit to the Gajapati district for reviewing development works.

According to an official source, after the completion of Biju Expressway-I construction work, the State government is to start the second one. The new project bears the utmost significance from socio-economic development point of view. About Rs 7,000 crore will be spent on the ambitious project.

“This will create a new economic corridor in Southern Odisha,” 5T Secretary Pandian expressed.

As per an approved plan, the expressway will pass through 15 blocks of Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada and Koraput districts. Ganjam will have 43 kilometre-long stretch of road; Gajapati will have 47 Km, Rayagada 158 Km and Koraput 57 Km, respectively. After completion, the travel time from Berhampur to Jeypore will be three hours less than the usual time of eight hours beforehand.

Notably, the travel from Berhampur to Mohana will take only around 45 minutes and from Rayagada to Mohana only around an hour and a half, which is now taking around four hours. For the first time in Odisha, a long tunnel is to be constructed by digging the mountainous terrains.
