Rourkela: Tension prevailed as security was beefed up amid agitation by locals after a contractual labourer was electrocuted to death while working at one of the gates of Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium in Rourkela in Odisha’s Sundargarh district. The deceased was identified as Gopal Tirkey of Bhagatola village under Tainsar panchayat of Lathikata block here. He was a contractual labourer working with a firm ‘Dipshika Enterprises’.

Sources said Gopal was working at Gate 4 of the stadium when he came in contact with a live wire and fell to the ground. Seeing him collapse, onlookers rushed him to Rourkela government hospital in a critical state where doctors declared him dead.

As the news spread, irate locals from Gopal’s village and members of the BJP’s local unit took to the streets and staged an agitation demanding compensation for the kin of the deceased. Police meanwhile has beefed up security to take stock of the situation. Further investigation is underway.
