Bhubaneswar: A groom was reportedly picked up by the police from his wedding procession in Odisha’s Sundargarh district for cheating another woman on the pretext of marriage.

The groom, Bishnu Pinga of Bamra in Sambalpur district, has been detained by Dharuadihi police in Sundargarh for cheating his lover six years ago.

As per the complaint, Bishnu had developed a relationship with a woman of Sundargarh around seven years ago. He had kept physical relation with the woman on the promise of marriage.

Bishnu allegedly ditched the woman after she got impregnated around six year ago and left for Chennai without informing anything to the latter. He had also changed his phone number, sources said.

The woman gave birth to a baby boy five years ago and she along with her child has been staying with her parents, sources added.

Bishnu, a mason by profession, recently returned home from Chennai and planned to marry a woman of Dharuadihi area in Sundargarh.

Bishnu’s lover somehow came to know about this and lodged a complaint with the police.

The police detained Bishnu while he was on his way to the bride’s house in a procession to tie the knot today morning, sources said.

“The accused has been detained for questioning,” said a police officer.
