Couple attempts suicide at hotel in Odisha’s Puri; girl dies, youth critical

Puri: A girl and a youth, reportedly a couple, attempted to commit suicide at a hotel in Odisha’s Puri town yesterday, after which the girl died while the youth has been hospitalised in a critical condition.

According to reports, the duo arrived at the hotel and asked for a room. However, the hotel staff denied them a room as they failed to produce necessary identity proofs.

Moments later, the two were found lying in an unconscious state on the veranda of the hotel after allegedly consuming pesticide.

Some friends of the youth rescued the duo and admitted them to the Puri district headquarters hospital, where the girl died while undergoing treatment.

The youth, identified as Ashish Pradhan of Chandanpur, was later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack as his condition deteriorated.

Police have started investigation into the incident. Actual reason behind the extreme step by the two can be ascertained after a detailed probe, police said.
