Couple dies after being hit by truck on NH, locals block Deogarh-Sambalpur road in Odisha

The deceased, identified as Sarat Sahu, a farmer of Asurkhol village, and his wife Visakha were going to their field to collect the harvested produce when a speeding truck hit their bullock cart from behind.

Deogarh: Vehicular movement was disrupted after agitating locals blocked the Sambalpur-Deogarh route following death of a couple in a road mishap on NH-49 near Tileibani Chhak in Deogarh district of Odisha here today. The deceased, identified as Sarat Sahu, a farmer of Asurkhol village, and his wife Visakha were going to their field to collect the harvested produce when a speeding truck hit their bullock cart from behind. The truck was heading from Deogarh towards Sambalpur when the collision took place. While both husband and wife died on the spot, one of the bullocks too was killed instantly after coming under the wheels of the heavy vehicle. Another bullock was grievously injured.

The driver and helper of the truck however managed to flee from the spot. As the news spread, locals gathered at the spot  and blocked the road demanding compensation for the family of the deceased. Police on getting information reached the spot and tried to take stock of the situation by assuring the villagers of needful action. Meanwhile, movement of vehicles were disrupted due to the road blockade. Police however informed that a case has been registered and investigation is underway.
