Court rejects bail plea of Maharathy, sends him to jail

Bhubaneswar:  A local court today dismissed the bail plea of former Minister and BJD’s candidate for the Pipili assembly constituency in Puri district, Pradeep Maharathy, and sent him to judicial custody.

He was sent to Jharpada Special Jail here after the Bhubaneswar Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) turned down his bail petition this evening.

Sources said Maharathy’s bail plea will be taken up for hearing next on April 24.

The BJD MLA, who fell ill while he was being produced in Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) in Puri earlier in the day, will receive treatment inside the Jharpada jail, the court directed. “If required then jail authorities may shift him to hospital for treatment.”

The former Minister was arrested earlier in the day for allegedly leading an attack on a team of officials of the Election Commission at his farmhouse on Sunday night.

He has been booked under various sections of IPC like 307, 353, 341, 332, 147, 148, 149, 188, 294, 333, 171 (B) & 506 of the IPC and 123 of Representation of the People Act.

Voting in Pipili assembly seat under the Puri Lok Sabha constituency is scheduled to be held on Tuesday along with 41 other seats.
