COVID-19 patient flees from hospital in Bhubaneswar, caught by locals

Bhubaneswar: Panic ran high among residents after a COVID-19 patient fled from a hospital and was found in a local market in Bhubaneswar.

The incident was reported on Friday. Two locals managed to nab the patient in a vegetable market near Bharatpur-Kalinga Studio locality and handed him over to hospital authorities.

According to reports, the 77-year-old man from Bhadrak district had tested positive for COVID-19 at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. While his family members were admitted to the AIIMS, he was shifted to the SUM COVID Hospital. While registration process for his admission into the hospital was underway, the septuagenarian silently walked out of the hospital. The security personnel tried to stop patient, but did not dare to catch him as they had not worn Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).

The patient reached a vegetable market and sat there as he was feeling tired. The residents were in panic after the information spread to the locality like fire. During the period, two brave youth fastened hands and legs of the old man with a rope without making delay and informed the Ambulance. Within a few minutes, the COVID hospital staff reached the spot with PPE in an Ambulance and took the patient the patient to the hospital.

The two youth, who had nabbed the patient, were also admitted to the COVID Hospital. Source said that their swab will be tested to detect coronavirus.
