Paradip: A crew member of an Indonesian cargo ship from which a large quantity of cocaine was seized at Paradip Port off Odisha coast last year, reportedly jumped into sea to end his life.
He was admitted to the Paradip Port Hospital in critical condition.
The accused was among three crew members of the ship detained in connection with a cocaine seizure case. Attempting suicide, he allegedly cut his wrist and jumped off the ship.
According to reports, the Customs department had seized about 22 kg of cocaine worth approximately Rs 220 crore from 'MV Debi' ship docked at Paradip Port in December last year. Based on an input from a crane operator who spotted 22 suspicious packets in the ship, the search was conducted on the intervening night of Nov 30 and Dec 1, 2023.
The ship had arrived from Gresik port in Indonesia and was about to depart to Denmark.
As many as 10 persons including three crew members, six crane operators and a stevedoring staff were detained in connection with cocaine seizure.
